Why does Suno mumble or rush my lyrics? (and how to fix it)

Learn · By Martin · Updated · 5 min read

Short answer

Suno rushes or mumbles lyrics when a line does not fit the melody it creates. The most common cause is uneven line length: a line with far more syllables than its neighbours gets compressed, a much shorter one gets stretched. Keep matching lines within about one syllable of each other, put stressed syllables on the strong beats and keep each line to one clear phrase.

How AI singers turn lyrics into melody

AI music generators build a melody per section and then fit your words onto it. Lines that play the same role – line 1 and line 3 of a verse, for example – usually get similar melodic phrases with a similar number of notes. If those lines have very different syllable counts, the singer has to improvise: squeeze, stretch or drop syllables.

The 4 most common causes

ProblemWhat you hearFix
Line much longer than its neighboursRushed, slurred or skipped wordsCut filler words so it matches the others (±1 syllable)
Line much shorterStretched vowels, awkward pausesAdd a word, or shorten the matching lines too
Stress on a weak beatWords sound unnatural (“ba-NA-na” → “BA-na-NA”)Reorder words so important syllables land on strong beats
Two ideas crammed into one lineBreathless phrasingSplit into two lines or keep one idea per line

Example

[Verse]
I left the old town at midnight (8)
with nowhere left for me to go (8)
and every single streetlight that was fading out of sight (14) ← rushed
kept singing songs I used to know (8)

Rewritten to 8 syllables, keeping the rhyme with “midnight”:

and every streetlight burning bright (8)

A 5-step fix

  1. Count syllables per line. Use a syllable counter rather than guessing – words like “fire” or “every” are easy to miscount.
  2. Set one target per section. For example 8 syllables for every verse line, or an alternating pattern like 8-6-8-6.
  3. Fix lines that are 2+ syllables off. Remove filler words (“just”, “really”, “that”), use shorter synonyms, or split the line.
  4. Check stress. Read the line out loud with a steady beat. If a word sounds wrong, move it.
  5. Keep the format clean. One phrase per line and section tags like [Verse] and [Chorus] – see Suno meta tags.

In the Lyrics2Song studio every line shows its syllable count against the target, and “Make it singable” rewrites only the lines that are off.

FAQ

Why does Suno skip or swallow words in my lyrics?

Usually because the line has more syllables than the melody has notes. The AI singer compresses the extra syllables, which sounds rushed or slurred. Shorten the line to roughly the same syllable count as its neighbouring lines.

Why does Suno stretch some words strangely?

When a line is much shorter than the others, the melody has more notes than syllables, so single syllables get stretched over several notes. Add a word or two, or make the matching lines shorter as well.

Does punctuation affect how Suno sings lyrics?

Somewhat. Line breaks matter most: each line is usually treated as one musical phrase. Commas can create small pauses, but they will not fix a line that is far too long.

Will regenerating the song fix rushed vocals?

Sometimes one take sounds better by luck, but if the lyrics are uneven the problem keeps coming back. Fixing the syllable balance first makes good takes much more likely and saves credits.
